BIONIC EYE: Augmented Reality on the iPhone

href="http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2009/09/24/bionic-eye/&service=bit.ly"> width="51" height="61" src="http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2009/09/24/bionic-eye/" align="right"/>

src="http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/bionic_eye.jpg" alt="bionic_eye" title="bionic_eye" width="260" height="190" class="alignright size-full wp-image-148448" />It was only yesterday that we pined about the lack of augmented reality applications for the iPhone 3GS, a device that definitely has everything such an app would require (camera with video capabilities, GPS, accelerometer, compass), and now we href="http://thenextweb.com/2009/09/24/bionic-eye-augmented-reality-app-iphone/">got one.

It’s called href="http://www.bionic-eye.com/">Bionic Eye, and it’s not entirely sure it’s legal (Apple said they’ll let developers create AR apps come September; well, September is here, but we’re not sure the embargo has been lifted), but it’s currently href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=330043513&mt=8">available in the App Store. It’s a pretty straightforward take on AR, letting you visualize Points of Interests located nearby in all US cities. It also works in the href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=331369472&mt=8">UK, href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=330044722&mt=8">France and href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=331370416&mt=8">Tokyo.

Now, before we continue, we must mention that several apps dabbled with AR on the iPhone before; href="http://mashable.com/2009/08/27/yelp-augmented-reality/">Yelp hid the functionality as an easter egg, while an app called href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/first_iphone_augmented_reality_app_appears_live_in.php">Metro Paris Subway did something similar to what Bionic Eye does, but only in Paris.

Bionic Eye will likely receive far more attention due to the fact that it works accross the US, letting you visualize locations such as restaurants, coffee shops, Apple stores, and various tourist locations. In vertical position it gives you a 360-degree view of all POI near your location, updated in real time; when you flip it to horizontal position, you’ll see a list of all the nearest POI. Check out a video demonstration below.
